Throughout the first four books, Vinland Saga has been a revenge tale set within the Danish Invasion of England during the 11th century as Thorfinn has been journeying alongside his father’s killer, Askeladd, just so that he can kill him in a duel。 The last book concluded with Prince Canute killing Askeladd in front of Thorfinn, who not only loses his chance to avenge his father, but also his purpose in life。 Eventually sold into slavery to work on a farm in southern Jutland, far away from battl Throughout the first four books, Vinland Saga has been a revenge tale set within the Danish Invasion of England during the 11th century as Thorfinn has been journeying alongside his father’s killer, Askeladd, just so that he can kill him in a duel。 The last book concluded with Prince Canute killing Askeladd in front of Thorfinn, who not only loses his chance to avenge his father, but also his purpose in life。 Eventually sold into slavery to work on a farm in southern Jutland, far away from battle, a few years have passed and we see how Thorfinn empty is during this quiet time。War may still be ongoing, but the story takes a detour into simple farm life, albeit run through slavery。 The drama centres on Thorfinn finding friendship with the newest slave Einar, born on a farm in Northern England。 New to how slavery works, particularly the laws of Ketil’s farm, Einar is very outspoken, whilst Thorfinn, who has been there for a while, maintains some form of order by maintaining his silence。 As the two slaves learn more about one another, from Einar losing his whole family at the hands of Vikings, to Thorfinn revealing his vengeful past, not only do we see a friendship that is both touching and funny, Thorfinn himself reclaims his role as the main protagonist as we see some major development。Although this change of pace might catch readers off-guard, but the drift away from the battles ends up being the biggest benefit in the series so far, because it allows for a greater exploration of characterisation。 That’s not to say that the previous books were lacking in characterisations as we saw some great arcs with Askeladd and Canute, but with Thorfinn back into the central focus sets up a journey that builds on the ideas from the very beginning。From the numerous conversations between Thorfinn and Einar, they got the opportunity to work for Ketil’s father, Sverkel, who is the true owner of the land。 With the few scenes he has, not only does Sverkel steal the show, but he ends up being the voice of reason and lectures on how Thorfinn can be reborn after feeling empty for so long。 During a confrontation with soldiers who have been abusing their superiority towards the two slaves, Thorfinn gets knocked out and falls into a dream where he confronts his past sins。Despite the lack of action, Makoto Yukimura brings such a level of detail to the characters and vistas that he has proven himself as one of the premier artists in the manga industry。 The comparisons to the late Kentaro Miura’s Berserk are here and although this is more historically-based than fantasy, the dream sequence becomes one of demonic horror as Thorfinn has to literally climb himself out a dream and become a true warrior。Whilst there is an array of characters during the farming section that are worth exploring, there are a couple of chapters where we see Canute trying to maintain his dominance as King of England whilst at war against Ethelred II who has returned from exile in Normandy to reclaim the throne after Sweyn's death。 As we get to see Canute becoming a darker figure, as well as a fun reappearance from Thorkell, the war of England rages on and it’ll be interesting to see how this side of the story develops, coalescing with Thorfinn’s growth as an adult。 。。。more

Unnecessary nudity in this one, but nothing a pencil wont fix。 Finally thorfinn is no longer running from himself, is listening to the ways of honor, and finding purpose。 To live without purpose is too great a burden。 He was one dimensional before, but that was on purpose。 We get to see past the bravado of others as well。 Perfection isnt necessary, growth is。

So I’ve heard it said this is a lot of people’s lease favorite arc and I can see why。 However, I love Thorfinn’s character growth in this bind up and while there is not as much action I still really like this quieter aura。

Thorfinn is one of the greatest protagonists of all time。

im gonna be honest the war arc was phenomenal so this kinda felt underwhelming。 but we do get a lot of character growth and healing。 the last few chapters were also pretty good that it made up for the less exciting chapters。

This is probably one of the most consistently good stories I've ever read manga or novel。 So much to talk about and unpack Thorfinn is a wonderful character to explore。 I usually hate revenge stories but Vinland does something many do not which is show growth。Thorfinn and Einar's relationship is amazing, Einar is bae, the best guy to be around。 This is probably one of the most consistently good stories I've ever read manga or novel。 So much to talk about and unpack Thorfinn is a wonderful character to explore。 I usually hate revenge stories but Vinland does something many do not which is show growth。Thorfinn and Einar's relationship is amazing, Einar is bae, the best guy to be around。 。。。more

In the fifth volume of this seven-book manga series, a demoralized Thorfinn is working as a Thrall on a huge farm。 The first three-quarters of this book is entertaining, but feels very slight。 In the last quarter though, things get very intense and surrealistic。 It's a risky move, but Yukimura pulls it off。 In the fifth volume of this seven-book manga series, a demoralized Thorfinn is working as a Thrall on a huge farm。 The first three-quarters of this book is entertaining, but feels very slight。 In the last quarter though, things get very intense and surrealistic。 It's a risky move, but Yukimura pulls it off。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The action and pacing slow down for this volume。 That isn’t a bad thing。 All of the pluses from the past stories are still here。 The twist of Thorfinn being turned into a slave is good and I think it drives the story well, and it is unique。 I’m also glad that he is haunted by his demons from the past and doesn’t know what to do with his life。 The biggest reason for the three star is that at the end Thorfinn says that he will never fight again or use violence。 This is an incredibly common and bor The action and pacing slow down for this volume。 That isn’t a bad thing。 All of the pluses from the past stories are still here。 The twist of Thorfinn being turned into a slave is good and I think it drives the story well, and it is unique。 I’m also glad that he is haunted by his demons from the past and doesn’t know what to do with his life。 The biggest reason for the three star is that at the end Thorfinn says that he will never fight again or use violence。 This is an incredibly common and boring Japanese trope, most likely born out of post-WW2 pacifist thinking。 I don’t have an inherit problem with it, but it better cost Thorfinn something and lead to a greater understanding on his part。 Overall not bad。 。。。more

I was a little disappointed in this edition, as I did not see Thorfinn in the role he has here。 That being said, I understand why the author chose to go this direction。 The art is still great and the story is engaging, but I found it slower than the other previous books。 This is like #2 for me, so maybe it is just developing the arc for the next volume。 People who like historical facts will like the time spent on showing how the Norse farmed。

Alot closer to 4。5 stars really。 I do love this series。 I wish we could do half star ratings

It has taken me a while to return to this series。 Vol 4 has a major event, that completely changes the direction and potential tone of the series。 Finally seeing where things turn I have to say I am not disappointed。 It begins to explore the heart of what is truly fulfilling in life。 Our lead character still has his edges and scars, but there are some major developments here。 What I particularly love is seeing the way the art style explores the story in a peaceful setting。 The hard edges contras It has taken me a while to return to this series。 Vol 4 has a major event, that completely changes the direction and potential tone of the series。 Finally seeing where things turn I have to say I am not disappointed。 It begins to explore the heart of what is truly fulfilling in life。 Our lead character still has his edges and scars, but there are some major developments here。 What I particularly love is seeing the way the art style explores the story in a peaceful setting。 The hard edges contrast nicely with farming setting。 I cannot wait to get my hands on vol 6! 。。。more

One of the best manga runs at the moment。 This breaks from the war story the others have provided。 More a character study and deals with self growth。

I really appreciate how Yukimura can take his time。 Being mostly a fan of Shonen Jump and their properties。 I often find the pacing is break neck。 This is for a plethora of reasons, but I still find that sometimes time is needed to really allow the reader to experience the same emotions as the characters。 And in Vinland Saga's case, this was exactly what the story needed。 If I were to explain to an unknown viewer all that happened in this collection of Volumes 9 and 10, I would be sure to get a I really appreciate how Yukimura can take his time。 Being mostly a fan of Shonen Jump and their properties。 I often find the pacing is break neck。 This is for a plethora of reasons, but I still find that sometimes time is needed to really allow the reader to experience the same emotions as the characters。 And in Vinland Saga's case, this was exactly what the story needed。 If I were to explain to an unknown viewer all that happened in this collection of Volumes 9 and 10, I would be sure to get a lot of turned heads and confused faces。 Because, overall, the only thing that happens in this volume is we as readers get a glimpse into the daily struggles of a slave and a farmhand in the 11th century。 That isn't to say at all that this was a slow or boring。 No, Yukimura's art and character exploration makes these events feel like eye opening moments that humble our main characters thoroughly。 We see them change phenomenally in just 400 some odd pages it was truly a wonder to see。 He makes everything so breathtakingly reel。 Thorfinn's connection to his past and all those he has killed wasn't a conclusion he could come to quickly。 But instead, needed time to fester。 I related heavily to this。 He was a young boy who had everything taken from him。 Then he lived his life cursed with revenge being the only thing on his mind until that object of such aggression was taken prematurely from him。 Causing him to truly focus on something besides his unbridled hatred。 Causing him to truly find what his father originally wanted him to stand for。 It is truly a treat to see the extremes Thorfinn has experienced in such a short time。 I cannot wait to continue this masterful series。 。。。more

Very different from the first four volume, lot less action, but solid character development through it so that make it really interesting。 I like it a lot!

Continuing on after the best anime of 2019 ended。 Thorfinn slowly attempts to pull himself back into a life worth living after the climactic “End Of Prologue” that ended the show。 Slow but rich in it’s themes 👌

It says something about the quality of this series that I can read a book solely about thorfinn hanging out on a farm and still consider it a masterpiece。

The Saga comes to an uneventful crawl。For fans of Vinland Saga, Volume 5 can likely be skipped with a quick synopsis。 Thorfinn has been sold into slavery, works on a farm and has lost the will to live or care about anything。 The change in Thorfinn is due to his years at war and hollowness as his sole goal in life, to kill Askeladd to revenge his father, is over。 The change in character is too abrupt and not earned, which is saying something, considering how far of a journey the reader has follow The Saga comes to an uneventful crawl。For fans of Vinland Saga, Volume 5 can likely be skipped with a quick synopsis。 Thorfinn has been sold into slavery, works on a farm and has lost the will to live or care about anything。 The change in Thorfinn is due to his years at war and hollowness as his sole goal in life, to kill Askeladd to revenge his father, is over。 The change in character is too abrupt and not earned, which is saying something, considering how far of a journey the reader has followed Thorfinn。A peaceful volume of the story with no climax may result in reader's wondering if they should continue with the series。 As of the date of this review, these HC volumes are up to number 10 with 11 being release in Nov。 2019。 With that much story already published, surely there is more to explore and Volume 5 is simply a stepping stone (perhaps simply a character study) to help us get to the next "interesting" plot line。 。。。more

In this volume we learn less about the war and more about the internal struggle of Thorfinn。 We see his mental growth, dealing with human connections and learning to accept yourself and your past。 I have to be honest, at first I kind of missed the battle scenes, but after finishing it I can honestly say that I appreciate a volume like this as well。
